Two cars and a teenager's truck do not fit on a driveway poured for one sedan in 1962. We widen driveways, add parking pads beside the garage, pour turnarounds and run a strip back to a side gate for a trailer or a boat. Call (469) 257-3979 and we will mark out the new section with you on site.
How we tie new concrete to old
The new section has to stay level with the old one, or you get a lip that catches tires and mower wheels. We saw the old edge clean, drill holes into it and set steel dowels with epoxy. The new slab gets poured around those dowels, so the two pieces move together.
We match the thickness of the new section to the old one, or go thicker if it will carry heavier vehicles. New and old concrete will not match in color right away, and they may never match exactly. Some people add a border or a stamped strip to make the seam look planned.
| Job | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Broom finish extension, 5 inch, per sq ft | $7 to $11 |
| 6 inch pad for a trailer or truck, per sq ft | $8.50 to $13.50 |
| 10 by 20 ft side pad, broom finish | About $2,000 to $2,800 |
| Doweling into the old slab | Included in our price |
A small extension usually lands near our job minimum of about $2,000, since the crew and the truck cost the same.
Common extensions in Dallas
- A strip along one side to fit a third car
- A pad beside the garage for a trailer, a boat or a work truck
- A turnaround so you can pull out forward onto a busy street
- A wider apron at the alley so cars can make the turn
- A path from the driveway to a side gate or the back yard
If the extension needs to be 6 inches thick for a camper or a boat, see our RV and boat pad page.
Call and we will mark out an extension and price it.
Rules that limit how far you can go
Cities in Dallas County cap how much of a front yard can be paved, and some want a permit even for work on your own lot. Garland, for one, caps a driveway at 50 percent of the yard in most cases and requires a permit to widen one. Widening the curb cut at the street is a separate approach permit. We check the rules for your address before we stake anything out.
Questions about Driveway Extensions in Dallas
- Will the new part crack away from the old part?
- The dowels keep the two slabs at the same height. A line will show at the seam, and that is where we want any movement to happen.
- Can you widen the driveway without touching the approach?
- Yes, if the old curb cut is wide enough for the cars to swing in. If it is not, the approach has to be widened under a city permit.
- Can I add parking in my front yard?
- Sometimes. Each city limits how much of the front yard can be paved. We look up your city's rule at the estimate.
